Where to Donate Furniture and Household Items in York Region

Which charities take what, who offers free pickup in Richmond Hill, Markham, Vaughan and Thornhill, how far ahead to book, and what to do with the things nobody will accept.

Donating furniture and household items in York Region, Ontario

Written by a Richmond Hill and Markham Real Estate Expert

At Kirby Chan & Co. Real Estate Team, we help families clear out homes they have lived in for thirty or forty years, and the donation question comes up in nearly every one. We have watched a family lose a full weekend because the truck showed up at a drop-off that does not accept sofas, and we have seen a closing date arrive with a garage still full because nobody booked a pickup in time. This guide is the answer we give clients, written down.

Quick takeaway: Book the pickup before you finish sorting, not after. Most charities offering free furniture collection across York Region need one to three weeks notice, and longer in spring and late summer when everyone else is moving. Call ahead with a list rather than loading the car, because acceptance rules are stricter than people expect and large upholstered furniture is refused far more often than it is taken. Anything with a rip, a stain or a missing part is not a donation, it is disposal, and treating it as one wastes a trip.

Do This First: Book Before You Sort

The One Mistake Most People Book the Pickup Last

The instinct is to sort everything first, then arrange the donation. That is backwards, and it is the reason garages are still full on closing day.

Free furniture pickup across York Region typically runs one to three weeks out, and longer in April through June and again in August when moving season peaks. If you finish sorting on a Saturday and call on Monday, the earliest truck may be two weeks after the date you needed it.

Call first, get the date, then sort toward it. A fixed pickup date is also the single most effective thing for keeping the sorting moving, because a deadline turns a vague intention into a weekend plan. Families who do it this way finish. Families who sort first usually end up paying for junk removal.

What Gets Accepted and What Gets Refused

Charities are far more selective than most people assume, and for good reason: they have to sell or place what you give them, and storage is expensive. The general test is simple. Would you give it to a friend without apologising for it? If not, it will probably be refused.

Usually accepted Usually refused
Solid wood furniture in good condition Anything torn, stained, pet-damaged or smoke-affected
Dining sets, dressers, bookcases, desks Mattresses and box springs, almost universally
Clothing, linens, books, kitchenware Cribs, car seats and other recalled or safety-dated items
Working small appliances Large appliances at most drop-offs
Building materials, doors, cabinets, light fixtures Older televisions and tube monitors
Sofas and chairs in genuinely clean condition Particleboard furniture that cannot be moved without breaking
The Upholstery Problem

Sofas, armchairs and anything fabric-covered are the most commonly refused category, and the standard is higher than people expect. A sofa that looks fine in a dim basement will be assessed in daylight by someone who has to resell it. Send a photo when you call rather than describing it, and you will save yourself a wasted pickup slot that another family could have used.

Who Offers Free Pickup in York Region

This is the question most people are actually asking. Pickup is the difference between a donation being possible and a family renting a truck.

Diabetes Canada

Offers free home pickup of clothing and small household goods across York Region, booked online or by phone. This is the easiest option for bags and boxes, and the most reliable for a family that simply wants things gone. It does not cover large furniture, so it works alongside a furniture pickup rather than instead of one.

The Salvation Army

Arranges furniture pickup through its donation line rather than at the thrift store counter. This is the important distinction: large furniture and televisions are generally not accepted at a drop-off, so for a sofa or a dining set you need to book collection rather than drive it over. Call the donation line, describe the items, and expect a scheduled window rather than a same-week visit.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore

Takes furniture, building materials, cabinetry, doors, windows, vanities and lighting, and offers pickup for larger donations in many cases. They are selective and small quantities of certain items, tile in particular, are often declined. Always call with a list before loading anything. This is the best option by a wide margin if your clear-out includes renovation materials or kitchen cabinetry.

Furniture Banks and Newcomer Support Organizations

Organizations that furnish homes for families leaving shelters, newcomers and people rebuilding after a crisis will often collect good-quality furniture directly. Standards are high, because the furniture goes straight into someone's home rather than onto a sales floor, but if your pieces qualify this is the most direct route from your basement to a family that needs it. Service areas vary, so confirm they cover your part of York Region.

Donating in Markham

Markham Where to Take It and What They Accept

Habitat for Humanity ReStore Markham, 7701 Woodbine Avenue. Accepts furniture, doors, windows, vanities, lighting and building materials in good condition. They are selective, and small quantities of some items may be declined, so call ahead with a list before loading the car.

The Salvation Army Thrift Store, 9293 Markham Road in Markham Village. Accepts household items, clothing, books, small electronics and small furniture at the drop-off behind the store. Large furniture and televisions are not accepted at drop-off, so for a sofa or a dining set arrange a pickup through the Salvation Army donation line instead.

Diabetes Canada covers Markham for free pickup of clothing and small household goods. Book online and expect a scheduled date rather than a specific hour.

Donating in Richmond Hill

Richmond Hill Where to Take It and What They Accept

[ADD LOCAL LISTINGS: thrift store name, street address, what they accept, and whether drop-off or pickup. Follow the Markham format above.]

[ADD SECOND LOCATION]

Diabetes Canada covers Richmond Hill for free pickup of clothing and small household goods, booked online. For larger furniture, the Salvation Army donation line and Habitat for Humanity are the routes that will actually come to the house.

Donating in Vaughan and Thornhill

Vaughan and Thornhill Where to Take It and What They Accept

[ADD LOCAL LISTINGS: thrift store name, street address, what they accept, and whether drop-off or pickup.]

For households on the Thornhill side, the Markham and Richmond Hill locations above are usually the closest practical option, and most pickup services treat the whole of York Region as one service area.

Office Equipment, Electronics and Medical Equipment

Desks, Filing Cabinets and Office Furniture

Habitat ReStore is usually the best home for office furniture in good condition, and thrift stores will take desks and bookcases that are solid rather than particleboard. Filing cabinets are harder to place because demand has collapsed. If yours are in good shape, offer them to a local community organization or a small business before assuming a charity will take them.

Computers and Electronics

Working computers and monitors can often be donated to organizations that refurbish them for schools and newcomers. Older tube televisions and monitors are refused almost everywhere and belong at an electronics recycling depot rather than a charity. Wipe any drive before it leaves the house, and remove it entirely if the machine is going for recycling rather than reuse.

Walkers, Wheelchairs and Mobility Aids

These come up constantly when clearing a senior's home and they are genuinely needed. Community health organizations, service clubs and some pharmacies accept working mobility equipment for reuse. Call before assuming, because condition standards are appropriately strict on anything someone will rely on.

What Nobody Will Take, and What to Do Instead

Be Realistic Some of It Is Disposal, Not Donation

Mattresses, damaged upholstery, particleboard units that will not survive a move, old paint and chemicals, and anything with a safety recall are disposal items. Treating them as donations costs you a wasted trip and costs a charity a wasted pickup slot.

York Region and the local municipalities run waste depots and special collection programs for large items, electronics and household hazardous waste. Check your municipality's current rules for what can go to the curb, what needs a booked collection and what has to be taken to a depot, since these differ between Richmond Hill, Markham and Vaughan and they change.

For a full house, junk removal services will clear everything in a day at a cost. That is often the right answer for the final ten percent, once the donations and the family items are gone.

If You Are Clearing an Entire House

Sequence It, Do Not Attack It

A full clear-out of a long-held home usually takes two to four months, not two weekends, and it goes wrong when everything is attempted at once. The order that works: let family claim what they want with a firm deadline, book the donation pickups, sort room by room toward those dates, then handle disposal last.

Our decluttering and downsizing guide works through the keep, donate, sell and dispose decisions room by room, and the room-by-room checklist for Markham gives you the order to do it in.

If the Clear-Out Is Part of a Move

Most people reading this are emptying a house because it is being sold. If that is you, the clear-out, the preparation and the listing all need to be timed together rather than handled as separate jobs. Our downsizing guide covers the full process, seniors downsizing in Richmond Hill covers the senior move specifically, and downsizing in Markham covers that side of York Region.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who picks up furniture donations for free in York Region?

Diabetes Canada offers free home pickup of clothing and small household goods across York Region. For large furniture, the Salvation Army arranges collection through its donation line rather than at the store counter, and Habitat for Humanity ReStore offers pickup for larger donations in many cases. Furniture banks and newcomer support organizations also collect good-quality pieces directly.

How far in advance should I book a furniture pickup?

One to three weeks in normal periods, and longer from April to June and again in August when moving season peaks. Book the pickup before you finish sorting rather than after. A fixed date is also the most effective thing for keeping the sorting on schedule.

Will charities take my sofa?

Only if it is genuinely clean and undamaged. Upholstered furniture is the most commonly refused category, and the standard is higher than most people expect because the charity has to resell it. Send a photo when you call rather than describing it, and you will avoid a wasted pickup slot.

Where can I donate furniture in Markham?

Habitat for Humanity ReStore at 7701 Woodbine Avenue takes furniture and building materials in good condition, though they are selective, so call ahead. The Salvation Army Thrift Store at 9293 Markham Road accepts household goods, clothing and small items at drop-off but not large furniture or televisions, which need a booked pickup through the donation line.

What can I not donate?

Mattresses and box springs almost universally, anything torn, stained, pet-damaged or smoke-affected, cribs and car seats, older tube televisions, particleboard furniture that will not survive a move, and paint or chemicals. These are disposal items, and your municipality's waste depot or a junk removal service is the right route.

How long does it take to clear out a whole house?

Two to four months for a long-held family home, not two weekends. The order that works is: let family claim items with a firm deadline, book the donation pickups, sort room by room toward those dates, then handle disposal last.

Who can help me clear out and sell a home in York Region?

Kirby Chan is a Broker with Kirby Chan and Co. Real Estate Team at eXp Realty, serving Richmond Hill, Markham and Thornhill. The team regularly helps families sequence a clear-out alongside preparing and selling a long-held home, so the donations, the staging and the listing all line up rather than competing for the same weeks. Clearing a Home Before You Sell?

The clear-out is usually the longest part of a move and the part most likely to derail a closing date. We help York Region families sequence it properly: what to clear, when to book it, what to prepare before listing and how to time the sale around it.
